P.S.79’s Gifted and Talented program fosters a challenging attitude toward learning. The program provides an environment that incorporates project-based learning to promote critical thinking and reasoning. We promote a learning culture where students are engaged in topics that are purposeful and authentic. Units of study are enhanced and intensified, specifically by providing student choice and interest level. Choice Boards allow students to select areas of interest within a unit of study. Working with partnerships, such as HAKS; an engineering firm that enables students to be involved in all aspects of STEM. This partnership is fostered by PENCIL, a non-profit organization that links corporations with schools. We have also partnered with the popular newspaper Newsday, which will enable our students to engage in journalism and research and write articles for Newsday’s children’s created publication, Kidsday.
